    Texts:

    Robert Aitken, Mind of Clover
    Reb Anderson, Being Upright

    Study Process
Each group meeting will include discussion, experiential exercises, and reflection in small groups on what these precepts mean for us as human beings and students of Zen and in reflection of the teachers' comments in the 3 primary texts we study (see below).

In between meetings students will be invited to reflect on how the precept in focus shows up in their life and will be asked to do some kind of active response. This response would be written, artistic or verbal. At each meeting a new assignment for the next month will be offered by the teacher of that month’s group.

    More on receiving Jukai
For those it suits, receiving Jukai is a wonderful step and provides the student with a focus and structure in practice.  It also offers the sangha support and nourishment through the student’s publicly made commitment to practice and precepts.

If you’re interested in in receiving jukai: you must receive permission from a sangha teacher. Speak either to Guiding Teacher Tim Burnett, Sangha Teacher Ryushin Andrea Thach, Lay Teacher John Wiley or to one of our Mentors who have been shuso and are authorized to support you in preparation for jukai: Edie Norton, Talus Latona, Bob Penny, Chris Burkhart, or Kate McKenna.

To clarify: in addition to attending the Precept Study Group and receiving permission from a sangha teacher, in order to move towards jukai you will also be meeting with a sangha teacher to discuss your process of engaging with the precepts privately in Practice Discussion or Dokusan.

And it’s important to note that it’s wonderful and complete to study the precepts without approaching jukai and that receiving jukai and wearing the rakusu is not a requirement (or a blanket recommendation) in our sangha. It’s a choice and a discernment to be made with a teacher. (For more on Jukai and other training options at Red Cedar please see: the Going Further page on the website).

Please use the registration form at the left to RSVP if you intend to come to study group.

This trip includes two nights in Seattle: in the registration you will indicate whether you'd like to join us in a shared Airbnb house or can find your own place to stay. You can also volunteer to drive in the registration process.

The registration fee covers: shared Airbnb housing (optional), gas money for the drivers, and donations to the temples we're visiting, but please bring funds for restaurant meals.

Questions about the trip? Please contact Sangha Trips Coordinator Rei Greene at rei.greene@gmail.com. And please check back here for updates. If you register now you will also receive updates automatically.

The Zen ceremony of jukai (literally "receiving precepts") is a ceremony of commitment to the Zen precepts, the Zen path, and the sangha. Done by lay students it marks a deepening of commitment to Zen and a warming of relationship with the teacher.

In this year's jukai five Red Cedar members will receive the precepts: Elizabeth MacDonald, Judith Koontz, Laughing Owl Tydnall, Rei Greene, and Wayne Weinschenk  will receive the precepts from Nomon Tim Burnett with the support of Seishu John Wiley and Ryushin Andrea Thach.

The ceremony is preceded by a half-day sesshin with oryoki breakfast and lunch (please bring your own oryoki set for meals)

Please register for your attendance at either the full retreat or just the jukai ceremony. Small charge for the sesshin to cover food costs (discounted for RCZC members) or non-charge RSVP to attend just the ceremony at 3pm.

A Ceremony to Free our Restless, Hungry Hearts
(Segaki / Sejiki / Feeding the Hungry Ghosts)
Japanese Buddhist image of a gaki (hungry ghost) tormented by demons

The hungry ghost realm in Buddhism also appears as our deep suffering of endless desire and aversion. In the Spirit Settling Ceremony we recognize and heal this difficult side by calling forth the hungry spirits, within us and without, and making offerings of food, chants, songs, noise, and prayers.

The Sangha is invited to bring: offerings of nourishing food and sweets for the altar and also objects that symbolize the hungry ghost in your heart, noise makers (instruments, pots and pans, anything), wear scary costumes, and hang up creepy Fall decorations.

Finally we'll have a basket for Food Bank donations for those in our own community who cannot afford good food. Feel free to bring a food donation.

For the evening of the Spirit Settling Ceremony we change the atmosphere of the Zendo from staid and restrained to wild and chaotic so that these hungry, wandering spirits will feel at home.

Wednesday Evening Schedule on Spirit Settling night:

    7:00pm Zazen
    7:40pm Kinhin
    7:50pm Dharma Talk
    8:20pm Spirit Settling Ceremony
       followed by tea and cookies

More images of gaki (hungry ghosts) from Kodaiji Temple in Japan seen by Tim during the 2010 Everyday Zen trip to Japan. (Sometimes they are pretty funny looking too)

Our annual celebration of Buddha's Awakening.

Our annual combined retreat between Red Cedar Zen Community and Seattle Soto Zen led by Nomon Tim Burnett and Kanshin Allison Tait.

Sesshin begins with 7pm on Wednesday night then continues with regular 6am - 9pm sesshin days on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Saturday night is an optional all-night sit (traditional in rohatsu sesshin). The retreat concludes on Sunday morning with a 6am-9am practice session including the Buddha's Enlightenment Ceremony and informal breakfast.

Attendance options: register for the full retreat, full days on Thursday/Friday/Saturday, or Sunday from 6am until the end. You may also drop in for late night sitting on Saturday night.

Oryoki: meals will be the formal Zen 3-bowl Oryoki. You must bring your own oryoki set as we have no more loaners or for sale sets available. We recommend the sets at Still Sitting on Vashon Island (order the navy colored cloths). Our meals are always vegetarian and include gluten and dairy-free option.

The practice of sesshin is a powerful opportunity - watching the sun rise in the morning and set in the evening from your seat in the zendo. Sitting a full day is do-able with a little training and experience. Each day includes alternating sitting and walking meditation, Dharma Talks, optional private meetings with the teachers, meals, breaks, and afternoon tea.

Note: we include our regular weekly Wednesday night and Saturday morning zazen practices for the community and sangha in the sesshin. (but not the Friday noon, that is cancelled this week). Feel free to come sit with the sesshin participants on Wednesday evening or Saturday morning even if you are not sitting sesshin.

Join us for a thorough and supportive training in how to serve on the Doan-ryo: the group which rings the bells, hits the drum, and leads the chants at our regular services and special ceremonies. Learn how to be the:

    Doan - bell ringer

    Kokyo - chant leader

    Tenken - time keeper

Performing the ceremonial positions is a core part of Zen training. Challenging and rewarding.

Please use the registration for no-cost RSVP so we know whom to expect. Interested in training but can't attend at this time? Please let Ino Hannah Sullivan know at hsullivan33@gmail.com.
