Zoketsu Norman Fischer discusses the practice of Japanese monk Kōshō Uchiyama, who called upon Kanzeon/Avalokiteshvara boddhisatva to help him in his zazen (as a young man, he suffered illness which impacted his physical condition later in life).
He also discusses Uchiyama's "opening the hand of thought," or the appeal to release our grip on life and the world by releasing what we think to be true.
