    Robert Aitken, Mind of Clover
    Reb Anderson, Being Upright

    Study Process
Each group meeting will include discussion, experiential exercises, and reflection in small groups on what these precepts mean for us as human beings and students of Zen and in reflection of the teachers' comments in the 3 primary texts we study (see below).

In between meetings students will be invited to reflect on how the precept in focus shows up in their life and will be asked to do some kind of active response. This response would be written, artistic or verbal. At each meeting a new assignment for the next month will be offered by the teacher of that month’s group.

    More on receiving Jukai
For those it suits, receiving Jukai is a wonderful step and provides the student with a focus and structure in practice.  It also offers the sangha support and nourishment through the student’s publicly made commitment to practice and precepts.

If you’re interested in in receiving jukai: you must receive permission from a sangha teacher. Speak either to Guiding Teacher Tim Burnett, Sangha Teacher Ryushin Andrea Thach, Lay Teacher John Wiley or to one of our Mentors who have been shuso and are authorized to support you in preparation for jukai: Edie Norton, Talus Latona, Bob Penny, Chris Burkhart, or Kate McKenna.

To clarify: in addition to attending the Precept Study Group and receiving permission from a sangha teacher, in order to move towards jukai you will also be meeting with a sangha teacher to discuss your process of engaging with the precepts privately in Practice Discussion or Dokusan.

And it’s important to note that it’s wonderful and complete to study the precepts without approaching jukai and that receiving jukai and wearing the rakusu is not a requirement (or a blanket recommendation) in our sangha. It’s a choice and a discernment to be made with a teacher. (For more on Jukai and other training options at Red Cedar please see: the Going Further page on the website).

Please use the registration form at the left to RSVP if you intend to come to study group.

Inspired by Eihei Dogen's 1240AD text the Mountains and Rivers Sutra (Sansuikyo), this retreat includes four days and three nights of silent backpacking through a beautiful old growth hemlock forest to a seldom-visited base camp at Mazama Park, just south of Mount Baker at the foot of Park Butte. Our days will be interspersed with some social and free time. Activities include traditional Zen practice, a short solo exercise, and opportunities for day hiking. The retreat is appropriate for new meditators and beginning backpackers.

The retreat begins at Hawk Meadow Farm with a day of meditation, preparation, and nature awareness activities.  The ritual form of the backpack is a pilgrimage to our home mountain, "sutra mapping" the Sansuikyo on the upper watersheds of the South and Middle Forks of the Nooksack River.

Led by Reizan Bob Penny & Nomon Tim Burnett
    Please see www.RedCedarZen.org for details.

    More Details:

There will be an opportunity during registration to make a dana offering if you choose (details on Dana Paramita here) and you may also make a dana offering at any time on the Dana page. Sauk Mountain Full Moonrise Hike

Join us for a special early evening day hike to the summit of Sauk Mountain in the Cascade Foothills.  Sauk Mountain was the fire lookout location where eventual Zen priest Phillip Whalen spent the summer of 1953.  The lookout building is long since gone. The same summer his friend Gary Snyder was lookout on Sourdough Mountain.  Later Whalen was also a lookout on Sourdough.  In his poem "Sourdough Mountain Lookout" Whalen wrote -

"Then I'm alone in a glass house on a ridge
    Encircled by chiming mountains
With one sun roaring through the house all day
& the others crashing through the glass all night
    Conscious even while sleeping"

On this hike we will attempt to capture some of the experience Whalen spoke of.  We will arrive on the summit just as the late summer sun is setting over the Skagit Valley and the Salish Sea, and then moments later view the full moon rise over the Picket Range off to the east while the mountains go down in sunset glow.

The hike is a short climb of just two miles and 1,200' of elevation gain (four miles round trip).  It is a very popular hike and we are sure to not be alone on the summit.  Bring warm clothes and a wind breaker to put on for some summit-time hanging out, water, a snack, and be sure to bring a headlamp for the hike back down.

We will meet at the Red Cedar Dharma Hall at 3pm to form carpools for the 1-1/2 hour drive to the trailhead. We will expecting to get back to the Dharma Hall by about 9:30pm.
