Encouraging Words

Full Value Contract
We commit:
  • to maintaining physical, psychological, and emotional safety
  • to working together to foster both group and individual goals; giving the group what it needs and individuals what they need.
  • to speaking and listening fearlessly to one another and fully talking things through.

Old Business:

Open Board Position: Secretary

The board nominates Bernadette Prinster to the open position of Board Secretary (vacated by Anne Mikkelsen).  Bernadette is willing to perform this service. Feedback from the Red Cedar Zen Community membership is requested. Please forward your feedback on this nomination to board@redcedarzen.org or any board member by the next board meeting on April 18.

Open Bookkeeper Position

Several promising potential bookkeepers have declined because of the low pay offered for the position.  Consensus to raise Bookkeeper payment to $22 per hour in hopes of attracting and retaining a competent bookkeeper.

New Business:

Open Board Position: At-Large Officer

The board nominates Tuli Candela to the open position of Board Secretary (vacated by Jaren Hoppe-Leonard).  Tuli is willing to perform this service. Feedback from the Red Cedar Zen Community membership is requested. Please forward your feedback on this nomination to board@redcedarzen.org or any board member by the next board meeting on April 18.

The Family Promise Project

The Family Promise project of the Interfaith Coalition of Whatcom County has contacted Tim to invite our support. They provide support for families experiencing homelessness. Some congregations provide housing and others provide other support. Volunteer support may be asked for. Director will meet with Tim to describe what they are looking for. We foresee our capacity to endorse donations collection or volunteer work, but limited capacity to offer directly on Red Cedar's behalf. The board will consider further after the request has been clarified.

Timing of Our Annual Appeal

Previous Annual Appeal decision was that it would be best toward tax time where people might have unbudgeted cash from their tax returns to contribute. However, to move it immediately from the previous December timing would be too soon after the previous appeal. To move gradually, last year was moved to August and this year April was proposed. The cost-benefit of a mailed paper appeal versus an electronic appeal is still being studied.  The Board decided to have the appeal electronically this year in July-August.

Thank You cards with tax information were put out by Chris and Tim and Terrill in early February.

Sangha Annual Meeting

The agenda will include: Financial Report from 2017 is complete. Previously agreed budget for 2018 will be adjusted by Talus to include new information on  bookkeeper costs, wild apricot price increase, and our raising Samish fees. Talus will forward membership report from Terrill to Ken. Compassion in Action: Homeless and Kenya project. Volunteer report needed (in the future this might be at-large member function). Finish the meeting with Open discussion time.

Next Board Meeting: April 18 at 5:30 PM

respectfully submitted, Talus Latona
